In a few words, they describe their backgrounds, experiences and impressions… What is it like to be an international student at Bordeaux Sciences Agro?

Hi my name is Ilke Yasa, I’m from Turkey. I’m studying the Master of science in Viticulture and Winery management.

I was studying Business Administration in Marmara University, then I started to work in a vinyard for two years. It was a real experience for me because I realized my passion about wine.

Actually I love it. School is really amazing, especially program because I did a lot of research before I came here, after my work experience. I just realized what are my deficiencies like a agriculture and chemistry. I did a lot of research and Bordeaux Sciences Agro show me like they have a program that encouters my needs. I came here and also like Bordeaux City Center is really amazing like the all modern architecture and the people… everything is really perfect.

My name is Lucia Pisacco. I’m from Argentina. I’m here doing the bachelor in viticulture and enology. I’m part of an exchange program called ArFrAgri Argentina Francia Agriculture. I’m here because of that.

In Argentina I study food engineery and I’m here because my region is an agriculture region so I don’t have the possibility of study wine in my region so I think Bordeaux is the best place in the world for study wine and grape.

Yes actually it’s my first time outside my country, so I’m enjoying my time here and I’m very surprised and I really love the the French culture, the landscape and all here.

Hello, my name is Lydia Kritsotaki, I’m coming from Greece. I’m an Erasmus Plus student and I’m coming for Aristotle University in Thesaloniki. I’m here to study a bachelor about viticulture and enology and I chose this program because Bordeaux is the capital of wine. I love wine and I think everybody loves wine, and even if it’s the same variety still is a different world like you experience different tastes different aromas… it’s always a new experience so I was more interested to see the world of wine and learn about it more.

I’m still studying in Thesaloniki, I’m studying agriculture, so when I’m finishing my studies here I will be back to finish my studies in Greece. Also I’m part of a Pomology lab in my University, I’m volunteering there there I’m doing I’m helping PhD students uh with different experiments that the lab does.

I really like the school, I like that especially in September there are a lot of events where you can meet people. People are really communicative, they communicate with you they’re open to know you. They do a lot of “apéros” which it was my first experience and I really enjoy them. Also France is always a good choice: I mean it’s a beautiful the culture, the environment… I think it was the best choice I could do !

I’m Manon van Beek, I’m from the Netherlands and I follow the Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Enology here in Bordeaux, at Bordeaux Sciences Agro.

At the moment I’m in my third year of my study in the Netherlands, in food innovation and I study at House Green Academy in the Netherlands. I don’t have any previous experience in wine but we had a guest lecture by Mark Greven back at our University and he really intrigued me and sparked my interest in wine, so that’s why I’m here today.

So far, the experience here has been great. It’s been amazing and I’ve actually decided to stay here for the full year instead of just one semester so that pretty much already says I think that it’s a great program and there’s very nice people and also the city of Bordeaux is very nice, so far. So I’m happy to be here.

Marc Plantevin

“This master is very interesting because you have great teachers, lots of applications of winemaking, internships, audits, etc.”

Marc Plantevin - PhD student

Vine & wine Master of Science

Discover the exclusive interview with Marc Plantevin, former student of Bordeaux Sciences Agro, now a doctoral candidate conducting innovative research on climate change adaptation and the preservation of the typicality of Bordeaux vineyards.

My name is Marc, I’m 30 years old and I’m a PhD student in Bordeaux working in viticulture and enology. I don’t have a very strong scientific background. Indeed I first started in Hospitality, so I did three years of study in Hospitality, then I’ve been a sommelier, first in London then in Paris in some 3 Michelin’star restaurants. It has been very helpful for the rest of my career to be a sommelier. It’s only during COVID time that I wanted to go back to school and to learn about wine science. So I had the opportunity to be enrolled in the Master of Science Vineyard and Winery Management at Bordeaux Sciences Agro. So for two years I’ve studied about wine science, winemaking, enology and viticulture, and it has been very helpful for my PhD.

What is the scientific aim to your PhD?

My PhD is a bit particular in the way that I’m working with a private company as well with the public company which is Inrae science center. So I’m in both sides: the private and the public. My question is about climate change and wine typicity in Bordeaux. Indeed climate change is changing the wine typicity of Bordeaux and we’re trying to find new varieties in order to adapt to this global warming, also to keep and maintain this wine typicity, for the Bordeaux wineyards.

The main preliminary results?

The main innovative step we have in this PhD is this: normally, when you work on new plant material or new varieties, you only work on the science side of it, which is “Is it tolerant to climate change, drug tolerance etc.” The approach we have is first we try to answer this question about tolerance to climate change, but also this question: “Does it make sens to plant this variety in Bordeaux, in order to keep this wine typicity?”. This PhD is really either the pure science but also some kind of empirism from the wine world. This idea of increasing the varietal diversity in Bordeaux is not brand new. Indeed 100 years ago, we had a lot of of different varieties in Bordeaux, more than 50 different varieties. While today we have only six. So I’m working on this topic with this PhD but other winegrowers as well have planted on their own some varieties, older varieties of Bordeaux and try to see if it’s adapted to the new climatic conditions.

What is the originality of this approach?

The interest of this research is that it’s kind of very practical research. Because all the varieties that we are looking at, we want them to be planted in a near future in Bordeaux and we want this increase of diversity to happen in the next few years. We do have some first results: we mainly have five different varieties which are very interesting in terms of wine typicity, to protect this wine typicity. They mainly come from Bordeaux, they were planted 100 years ago. Some of them are coming also from Southwest of France, which is kind of close to Bordeaux. So those variety are protecting the wine typicity. However we still investigate if they are adapted to a warmer conditions, as we expect, in the near future. The main thing about this PhD is not about changing the grape variety in Bordeaux – it’s not what we want to do – it is only to increase the diversity of Bordeaux. So wingrowers can have different tools to adapt to climate change. It’s very about the history of Bordeaux, we always have a lot of different grape varieties in Bordeaux and we just want to reach this diversity.

What benefits can be expected after your thesis’ publication?

As every PhD fellow, when you end the PHD, you always have some academic results which are published in scientific journals. So we’re working on that, on the different topics on which I’m studying. But my kind of dream is more that the INAO, which is the governmental company which makes the rules of Bordeaux will be interested in those results, in order to kind of breaking the border and making things change for the winegrowers, for them to have many more tools to adapt to climate change.

An advice for those wishing to change career direction?

Whatever is your professional background, doing this master is very interesting. Because whatever you’ve done before, it always will be helpful for this master. This master is great for many reasons. First one, it’s really a melting pot of many people from many backgrounds, from all over the world, and it’s very rich in term of intellectualism. Then also this master is very interesting because you have great teachers, who are teaching a lot on wine science, on pure wine science, but you also have some pure application of winemaking like the internships, the audits… So you know how to make wine and you also understand how the wine is happening.

Do you recommend pursuing in PhD?

PhD, first of all, is a job in itself, righ? So for three years, you’re studying one topic, paid for that you don’t have lecture, it’s really a pure job. So it teaches you many things all about your topic, you’re becoming an expert obviously. But also about criticism: in terms of science, in terms of results… you have the the tools to analyze what people say to you. Then after PhD, you have let’s say two main pathways for a professional career: first one, being very academic, pure research, but also some private research as a “research and development” director in different wine estates, which is what I aim to do after this PhD.

A word to those who are temped?

Yes I think you should definitely do this master! It’s been great. Thank you.

My name is Nicholas Wasielski, I come from Wisconsin in the United States and I came to this University to get a bachelor in viticulture and enolog.

My background actually… I studied in the US to be a teacher and during that program – it was a four-year bachelor degree – I studied in Geisenheim Germany on a abroad experience, and when I went there, I learned a little bit about wine. Geisenheim is a notorious well-known research school for viticulture and enology, so it was super super interesting to me. When I went back to the US, I finished my program, I taught one year, and then I was like “I need to get a degree in viticulture and enology”. Here, there’s an English-speaking bachelor program, and… here I am.

First of all, I love Bordeaux, it’s super. I wish I spoke French, but um… obviously. I love the city, I love the campus, it’s a nice close community and also to meet other people from different countries, people from France too. It’s a really cool opportunity, but also just everything that’s around going to Arcachon, or Bordeaux or even more places that I still want to go visit… I really like it, it’s a nice part of France for me

My name is Abraham, I was born in Paris. Yes, I grew up in Paris, then came back last year to France from Germany where I lived for the last three years.

I studied first medicine for five years and then I took over the management of my family’s Vineyards two years ago, and I’ve been still managing it while doing the masters. Because I think it’s one of the best programs that we get for exactly what I want to do so: winery management.

Bordeaux is a nice city, I just arrived so it’s kind of interesting to move into a new environment, the studies are very interesting, teachers are very interesting. There is a very wide range of people that we have in the class, from all over the world, and it’s a very very nice to have not just students from France, and have a wider range of people to meet and discuss with.

I’m Rihane Ognik, from The Netherlands. I arrived here two months ago, so quite recently. I was a sommelier, so I worked in a restaurant and we served all the wines, all the beautiful wines that have been made in regions like Bordeaux, so for me it was kind of a good opportunity to get into the viticultural side of the wine business, I guess.

Well this is because it’s like the most renowned one in in terms of Viticulture and Enology. Someone told me about it, and it just got stuck in my head. One of the professors, Kees van Leeuwen and Mark Greven, they are both Dutch, so that made it easy to connect. It’s only 12 hours driving from Amsterdam, so it’s like far from home, but close too.

I like it a lot! Just the professors are amazing and the internship was super super nice to really deep dive for a short period into the wine business. I love friends, I love Bordeaux, it’s a lively city. I am trying to learn French, but uh we’ll see how that will work out, but I hope so!

I am Jonas, I’m from Belgium, I’m 21 years old.

I studied viticulture in Belgium, my parents have a vineyard and that’s also the reason why I’m here. I was actually two years in the Army before I came to BSA, but I had a little accident there. Actually, my plan was always to study in the vineyard and then help my parents later on, so that’s actually my main motivation of coming to BSA, because it’s an English program, it’s a very national renowned and international renowned programn and that’s my main reason to be here.

It’s going great, yes. A very nice group, the teachers are awesome, they teach us a lot, they have a lot of patience if you have questions you can email them ask them, theirselves are very awesome professors. It’s a great culture exchange. I’ve met a lot of new people, great friends, we do a lot of cool stuff: we go out, we have visits, we do a lot of stuff and it’s an awesome experience to be here!
