Supporting agricultural transition
At Bordeaux Sciences Agro, the Agroecology Department is dedicated to training agricultural engineers capable of understanding how natural ecosystems function, in order to produce sustainable agriculture that respects the environment and the biodiversity they harbor. By combining agronomy, plant health and ecology, agronomy engineers specializing in “Agroecology and resource management” will be specialists in the agroecological management of plant crops and the transition of agricultural systems, at different scales – from the plot to the production basin.
With the “GREEN – Gestion des ressources de l’environnement” specialization, environmental expertise involves knowledge of natural physical environments – soil, water, landforms, landscapes… and territories. This knowledge can be used as an aid to decision-making in a wide range of studies and consultancy situations, and brings together the potential of environments, risks and environmental issues.
The teaching and research staff who make up this department are specialists in soil composition, agroecological crop management, biodiversity, agricultural mapping and more.
A definition of agroecology
According to the French Museum national d’histoire naturelle, the definition of agroecology is as follows: “A contraction of agriculture and ecology, the term ‘agroecology’ designates a set of concepts and practices in which the knowledge of scientific ecology is used for agricultural production”.
Organic Agriculture under the microscope
Bordeaux Sciences Agro is home to a business chair that is unique in France: the “Chaire Agriculture biologique” – Organic Agriculture Chair.
The aim of the Chair is twofold: to share knowledge and experience between industry players and teacher-researchers, and to identify themes of collective interest that could be the focus of specific research projects.
